Manchester United have launched an official club Twitter account @manutd this morning, as part of a 'new era' vibe being generated around new Old Trafford gafferboss David Moyes.

The account kicked-off today with a bold tweet: "New era, same spirit. The season starts here. Let's do this. #mufc"

Later United posted their eyecatching artist's impression of The Moyes. Cheer up love, it's only a game!

They're going for a Che Guevara thing here I reckon, so hopefully a beret, a briar pipe and a period of armed struggle can't be far behind once the marketing gang give Davey a full makeover.

If you were nitpicking, you'd say it was a bit Planet of the Apes, with all it's apocalyptic implications, but "THE BEGINNING" might equally suggest some sort of zombie cannibal movie franchise, so it's very much a case of wait and see for United fans... exciting times!

And so it begins...... Aaaaaaaargh!!

Man United Twitter

United are coming late to the Twitter party - essentially last - but they've put in the spadework over the years in terms of global brand awareness so must be confident of building up a big following.

Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League official Twitter tree with 2,505,493 followers this morning. Moyes' old club Everton can muster just 215,482.

Manchester City boast 992,842 followers, Liverpool 1.77million, Chelsea 2.38million and Tottenham 521,890.

The big daddies in world terms look to be Barcelona (9.4million followers) and Real Madrid (8.1million).

With 135,000 followers in just the first couple of hours, United must surely be aiming that high.

Though they're still lagging far behind the funniest, sharpest Twittering in footy - @mirrorfootball now officially "MORE POPULAR THAN MANCHESTER UNITED"
