Democracy means nothing to majority in India

When I compare China with India, I find that the former has progressed much more than us since our independence in 1947. I would suggest that we should emulate China; people say that China is a dictatorship while we have democracy which gives us freedom of thought and expression.

However, I find that in the Hunger and Poverty index we are below not only China but also Pakistan which means that there are more poor and hungry people in India than those in China or Pakistan. Now, these poor and hungry people form 40% of the population of India. They do not want any freedom or democracy but want nutrition, safe drinking water, health care, education, medical facilities, housing and clothes. They even do not understand what democracy and freedom of thought and expression mean.? Moreover, only freedom and democracy cannot feed them. Also, we see what democracy means when we watch our Parliament in session where the legislators behave like street goons throwing mikes and chairs at each other. What is the use of such democracy?

Now, having seen that poor people in India are not interested in freedom and democracy, let us see whether middle class people and upper class people are really interested in freedom and democracy.?? They, of course, form 60% of the population.

I come from a middle class. My son is working for a private firm where there is a system of hiring and letting off. He has no job security. He works very hard from morning till about midnight and has hardly time for such niceties as freedom and democracy. The company gives him no freedom. This is the case with most middle class people.

Take the case of my wife who is a housewife. She is too busy cooking, buying things from the market, cleaning the house to find time for what freedom and democracy offer. Even in the upper classes, most of the people being businessmen are too busy with their business concerns and greasing the palms of Govt. officials and politicians to take advantage of freedom of expression and thought.

Only retired people, politicians and journalists and other elite classes are interested in freedom of thought and expression and democracy, and they form a minuscule of the population.
