The only thing slowing down the Ford II offense on Wednesday afternoon was the rain.

And even that was late.

By the time a torrential downpour saturated the Falcon infield, Ford had built an 8-1 lead over visiting Chippewa Valley in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was called, but enough of the game was played to make it official, giving Ford the MAC crossover win.

However, Mother Nature did win the second game of the doubleheader, which was postponed.

"I told the girls last week that I liked the way we've been playing," Ford coach Matt Joseph said. "We're playing really good softball right now and I like the direction we're heading in."

Ford took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Alex Sorgi led off with a single, moved to second on a single by Kayla Boland, before scoring on an RBI single by Gabby Schefka.

Chippewa Valley put runners on first and second and one out in the second inning, but Falcon pitcher Lindsay Dodson retired the next two Big Red hitters with a fielder's choice and a strikeout, thwarting the threat.

"Early on I thought we were a little bit sluggish," Joseph said. "Coming off a huge weekend (finishing second) at the Stars Tournament, we eventually started swinging the bats well and put (Chippewa Valley) away."

The Falcons added to their lead with another run in their half of the second when Dodson singled and eventually scored on an RBI single by Boland.

Ford tacked on two more runs in the third inning, increasing its advantage to 4-0. Lindsay Schuller had a run-scoring double, before scoring on an RBI single by Dodson.

An RBI single by Schefka in the fourth inning scored Sorgi, who also singled in the frame, pushing the Falcon edge to 5-0.

Chippewa Valley closed the gap to 5-1 with a run in the fifth inning when Tiffany Misch singled and scored on an RBI double by Nikki Caicedo.

The Falcons, though, added three more runs in the fifth inning, including two on a two-run double by Schefka, increasing their lead to 8-1 before the downpour made the field unplayable.

Ford was led by Sorgi with four hits and three runs scored, while Boland added three hits, an RBI and a run scored.

"When Alex gets on, she gets us going," Joseph said. "And Kayla's been hitting the ball well all year and she has great speed, too. When you put those two No. 1 and 2 in the lineup with their speed, it poses some problems."

Schefka contributed three hits, including a double and four RBIs, while Dodson had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Dodson also earned the win on the mound, allowing four hits and striking out six.

"(Schefka's) really in a zone right now, swinging a good bat," Joseph said. "She's playing with great confidence right now and she's as good a hitter as any hitter in the county right now.

"Lindsay's been incredible," Joseph added. "This is her fourth year on varsity and the one thing I've learned about her is that she gets better as the season goes on. She gets stronger and stronger."

The win improved Ford's record to 12-6 overall. Joseph said he hopes his team's recent success will carry into the Falcons' remaining MAC Red Division games, where Ford currently has a 2-5 record, and into the upcoming state tournament.

"A lot of this is learning to play at (the MAC Red) level, and I knew that going in," Joseph said. "I'm hoping this past weekend at the Stars Tournament, where we beat some very good teams, will hopefully carry us the rest of the year in the MAC Red. I believe we can compete with anybody."

Chippewa Valley was led by Misch with two hits and a run scored, while Caicedo added a double and an RBI, and Tristan Clark, who started on the hill and took the loss, chipped in with a single. The Big Reds' record fell to 2-12 overall with the loss.
