How hot was 2012? Hottest on record in US, by a long shot (+video)

Global warming 'has had a role' in making 2012 the hottest ever recorded in the lower 48 states, says a US climatologist. The average temperature was 54.3 degrees F., a full degree higher than the previous annual record.

The year 2012 was the warmest on record for the continental United States, eclipsing 1998's record average temperature of 54.3 degrees by a full degree Fahrenheit.

While one degree's difference may not seem like much, the spread between the record coldest year, 1917, and the previous record warm year, 1998, is just 4.2 degrees F. With 2012's record-high reading, the gap has grown by 25 percent, according to preliminary data from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, N.C.

Last year marked the 15th consecutive year of above-normal average annual temperatures for the continental US.

Global warming "has had a role in this," says Jake Crouch, a climatologist at the NCDC, during a briefing Tuesday on the year's data. Annual average temperatures for the lower 48 states have been increasing over the past century, although he noted that it's difficult to know how much of the warming in 2012 could be pegged to human-induced climate change versus natural variability.

Regionally, the Northeast, Southwest, South, and North West Central US posted record high annual temperatures, with the North West Central US coming in at 3.9 degrees F. above the long-term average, followed by the Northeast at 3.4 degrees F. above the long-term average.

Beyond temperatures, the continental US posted the second worst year, after 1998, for severe weather, as measured by the NCDC's US Climate Extremes Index.

The most pervasive severe conditions in 2012 centered on the ongoing drought in the US. At one point in July, moderate to exceptional drought, as measured by a gauge known as the Palmer Drought Severity index, covered 61 percent of the US. Other measures still put the drought coverage at 61 percent of the country, covering most of the western two-thirds of the US.

Toward the end of last year, a dearth of water flowing into the Mississippi River threatened to shut down barge traffic along a key section between St. Louis and Cairo, Ill. But the US Army Corps of Engineers released water from the Carlyle Lake Reservoir in Illinois, which fed water into the river. The Army Corps also used explosives to pulverize rocks on the river bottom that had become threats to navigation as the water level fell. These two actions, Corps officials say, are expected to keep the Mississippi open to barge traffic through the end of January.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Do The ...

In the current years, stock exchange daytrading has been fast rising in appreciation and plenty of individuals became very keen to bet with it. As you enter the stockmarket, you will understand that there are a lot of fine quality investments available for you and with this, you can immediately turn your little investment into a massive fortune in a short period. But for you to make this occur, you want to fastidiously understand the law of demand and supply to be able to think up systems that will work for your own benefit. If you are new to market daytrading these are some things to help begin. This also gives you the chance to test the stocks pick programme first hand if you wish. Daytrading is the method of purchasing stocks for a short term, with the expectation of capitalizing on the market short term upwards move.

This is straightforward to do and does not cost any investing cash to estimate how well its picks do as you can simply get the programme, receive a few picks, then sight follow their performances in the market. These are less expensive stocks with a gusto for going on awfully fast rewarding jumps because they're easier influenced and influenced with less market action. It?s very common to see one of those stocks jump to double or treble in price in an exceedingly brief period of time. The hard part is finding these stocks and separating them from the rest explaining why some stocks pick programs were designed with the object of only identifying these stocks, particularly. Did you miss-read the market? Was there something that you didn't check? Did you take the trade although it did not meet your trade standards? Or, was the trade set-up valid, it just did not work out? Use the loss as a learning opportunity : Ask, ?What am I able to learn from this trade?? Is there an understanding about market action that may be gained? Is there something about your trading behaviour that must be addressed? Whatever it is, you have got an occasion to realise something new, and that's valuable! Take rapid curative action : Is it necessary to alter your trade set-up? Is there a rule for private discipline required? Keep your head and disposition right : You have a choice about disposition. You can accept the loss as an unavoidable part of trading and be thankful you can learn something from it, or you can enter a negative, downward spiral of feeling bad, getting down on yourself, and making yourself feel far more sad. Follow the helpful steps published here and stay above all this.

Some of the systems can overlook and monitor the market, or select the best pick of stock for trader . The most significant issue about trading technique is that whether or not they are trustworthy? Is the data provided correct? Do the acquisition of system guarantee any cash back guaranty? In my private opinion, based totally on my experience in stock market dealing, I've been considerably profited from a specific trading technique. You may either select the systems to continually update the new stock statistical data, or use the ones that can research and prompt you the bullish stock pick or which is going to plunge. You can experience the results inside few days of use. The better part is the totally refundable guarantee for any unsuitable. Even if you're dependent on a great application to help, there are parts of randomness that they can not define for you. As time passes you can start to add one or two more of them to your daily analyses. A good goal for you is to have 3 times more profit in place than what your maximum amount you are prepared to lose actually is. One zone of weakness for many with stock option day-trading is knowing when to get out.

Suicide bombers strike Afghan spy agency in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Six militants ? one driving a car packed with explosives ? attacked the gate of the Afghan intelligence service in the capital Kabul on Wednesday, setting off a blast that could be heard throughout downtown and which sent a plume of dark smoke rising into the sky.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message sent to The Associated Press.

A high-ranking official with the intelligence agency, called the National Directorate of Security, said that there were deaths from the attack but did not say how many. He declined to give his name because he was not an official spokesman.

The explosion occurred about noon local time and was followed by volleys of gunfire for the next 45 minutes. As the car bomber drove into the gate, the five others attacked on foot, said Mohammad Zahir, the chief of the Kabul police investigation unit. All the assailants were killed in the fighting, he said. It was not immediately clear if some of the men on foot were also were wearing suicide vests.

Zahir said at least 30 people were wounded, but he did not have information on deaths.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw at least 10 wounded people being taken away in ambulances. The windows of nearby shops were blown out and reporters could see the mangled wrecks of at least seven cars that had been caught up in the explosion. The NDS compound is surrounded by tall, thick cement walls designed to protect buildings from bomb blasts.

An eyewitness who was wounded by flying glass, Mohammad Zia, said he saw a car drive up to the NDS gate and blow up.

It was the second attack aimed at the intelligence agency in two months. On Dec. 6, a Taliban suicide bomber posing as a messenger of peace blew himself up while meeting with agency chief Asadullah Khalid inside a Kabul residence he used to receive guests. The attack seriously wounded Khalid and he has since then been hospitalized at a hospital in the United States.

Attacks in the heavily secured Afghan capital are less common than in the restive south, but they do occur and are often sophisticated strikes with multiple attackers that aim to penetrate past the perimeters of armed guards and blast walls that surround government buildings and embassies. The most recent attack in Kabul was on Dec. 17, when a car bomber struck outside a compound used by a U.S. military contractor. That blast killed at least two Afghan workers and wounded more than a dozen other people.

A spokesman for the international military coalition in Afghanistan confirmed an explosion and small arms fire but did not provide further details. Maj. Martyn Crighton said that Afghan forces were responding to the attack and there was no involvement from the NATO military coalition.

(AP) ? Moviegoers at a San Diego theater ducked for cover as officers stormed in during a film screening and shot and critically wounded a gunman hiding in their midst.

No one else was hurt in the shooting Saturday inside Reading Cinemas Carmel Mountain in northern San Diego, officer David Stafford said.

The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Tom Billodeaux of Escondido, was taken to a hospital after being shot in the arm and chest, police said.

Billodeaux became the target of an intense police search after witnesses reported seeing him get into a fight with his girlfriend across the street from a shopping plaza where the Cineplex is located, Lt. Ernie Herbert said.

Witnesses tried to intervene, but he threatened them with a gun and ran to the shopping plaza.

The owner of a business next to the Cineplex said police shut down the shopping center's parking lot and stopped every car to look for the man. Officers with dogs checked each store, while a police helicopter hovered above.

"There were 20 police cars blocking the entrance, then the fire truck and the ambulance rushed in," Steve Krongard, the owner of the Nickel City arcade, said. "Then we saw seven cops with what looked like rifles, then paramedics went into the theater."

Herbert said police turned their attention to the Cineplex after learning that an armed man had ducked into the Cineplex.

Capt. Terry McManus told U-T San Diego that police searched theater by theater and evacuated moviegoers until two officers spotted him in a theater with about 15 others.

McManus said the man initially complied with officers' order to put his hands up, but then he put them back in his lap and brandished a handgun. He said one of the officers opened fire.

The officers thought their lives were threatened, he said, "and more importantly, they thought the lives of others were in jeopardy."

The theater's manager told Krongard the shooting occurred during a screening of "Les Miserables."

A moviegoer told KGTV the lights suddenly went on during the film and two officers came into the theater with their guns. Another witness told the station that everyone got on the floor and started heading for the exit doors.

McManus said the gunman never made any threats to others in the theater. He said the man had left a suicide note at his Escondido home before going to his girlfriend's workplace to confront her.

It was the second shooting at a San Diego County movie theater in as many days.

A concession worker suffered an arm injury when a shot fired outside a San Marcos movie theater went through the lobby window and struck her, sheriff's officials said.

The shooting occurred during a fight in the parking lot at Edwards San Marcos Stadium 18 and triggered a large police response because authorities were initially not sure whether there was a shooter inside the Cineplex.

No arrests have been reported after the San Marcos shooting.

For $100, ?75 You Can Send Anyone on Facebook a Message, Even Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook is expanding its messaging experiment with one version where users can pay $100,??75?and send a message to anyone on the site. Previously, Facebook made it possible to pay $1 to make sure a message to a friend didn't end up in the Other folder where it's easy to overlook.

The experiment is only available to a few people, but it shows that Facebook is more than willing to do seemingly strange things if it's on to something. While Facebook has always grown by copying a feature and then doing it better, it also went against the grain on more than one occasion, moves that in the end proved great. Features such as the News Feed were universally hated when first introduced.

While the feature may seem ripe for abuse, Facebook thought this through. There are limits to how many times someone can pay to send a message, you can just send 1,000 messages in a row. Even if you could, that would cost you $100,000, ?75,000.

Charging to prioritize messages is not a revenue scheme for Facebook, it's not going to make that much money in the grand scheme of things this way.

But it is a way to ensure that important messages get through, if you're willing to pay $1. ?0.75 to message a friend or $100 to message a complete stranger, you probably have something important to say.

Apart from the limit on how many messages you can pay to send, for example in the earlier experiment it was only one a week, there's probably a limit on how many paid messages a user can get, to prevent famous people from being inundated.

Note that, for most people, you can already send a message to complete strangers, unless they have altered their privacy settings to make it impossible for strangers to contact them.

But that message will end up in the Other folder, not the inbox. Users have to visit the Other folder specifically to see those messages and few do.
