Housing recovery blip: Foreclosures jump

By Allison Linn

The housing market has shown some promising signs of late, but a fresh batch of foreclosure data offers a reminder that any recovery from the housing bust will likely be slow, spotty and painful.

RealtyTrac reported Thursday that foreclosure filings rose by 9 percent in May from a month earlier, to 205,990 total properties that were subject to default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions.

The jump in foreclosure activity was likely because lenders are finally getting to a backlog of homes they might have started foreclosing on last year if they weren?t facing criticism for cutting corners and pushing foreclosures through too quickly and without adequate controls, said Daren Blomquist, a vice president with RealtyTrac.

He noted that the major increases came from properties that are just starting the foreclosure process.

Still, the figures for May are down 4 percent from a year ago. In addition, the report noted, recent sales data suggests that not all homes with foreclosure filings will result in the bank taking the property.

?Based on the rise in pre-foreclosure sales we?ve seen so far this year, a higher percentage of these new foreclosure starts will likely end up as short sales or auction sales to third parties rather than bank repossessions going forward,? Brandon Moore, RealtyTrac?s CEO, said in a statement.

That?s important because bank-owned homes tend to sell for less than homes in earlier stages of foreclosure.

RealtyTrac?s data shows that a home that is in pre-foreclosure sells for 21 percent less than a non-distressed home, on average. A bank-owned home sells for 33 percent less on average.

Blomquist cautioned that some of these houses entering the foreclosure process will end up being repossessed by the bank. In addition, the increase in foreclosure activity that is expected as banks work through their backlog could put a damper on housing prices once again, at least in some parts of the country.

?I actually think the stabilization in home prices and home sales is, in part, a result of the foreclosure inventory being artificially restricted over the past year and a half,? he said.

The National Association of Realtors reported last month that existing-home sales rose 3.4 percent from March to April and were up 10 percent from a year earlier.

Median home prices also were up about 10 percent in April from a year earlier. May?data is due out next week.

Record-low mortgage rates also could be providing a boost for the housing market. Freddie Mac said last week that the average rate on a 30-year loan dropped to 3.67 percent.

Of course, with real estate it?s always all about location, and the foreclosure report showed that while some pockets of the country have seen some improvement others are still struggling. Georgia posted the highest foreclosure rate for the month, overtaking traditionally foreclosure-plagued states such as Florida, California, Nevada and Arizona.

(You can click on the map above to get data by state, city or ZIP code.)

Blomquist said while some cities seem to have broken the housing-bust cycle and at least stabilized, the data from Georgia illustrates the uneven nature of the market.

?Georgia is still caught in the downward spiral of decreasing home prices, and that in turn is helping to fuel more foreclosures,? he said.

Preclinical study links aging and cancer, with lethal host metabolism in the tumor microenvironment

PHILADELPHIAIt has long been known that cancer is a disease of aging, but a molecular link between the two has remained elusive.

Now, researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson (KCC) have shown that senescence (aging cells which lose their ability to divide) and autophagy (self-eating or self-cannibalism) in the surrounding normal cells of a tumor are essentially two sides of the same coin, acting as "food" to fuel cancer cell growth and metastasis.

Michael P. Lisanti, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chair of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and a member of the KCC, and his team previously discovered that cancer cells induce an oxidative stress response (autophagy) in nearby cells of the tumor microenvironment to feed themselves and grow.

In this study, senescent cells appear to have many of the characteristics of these autophagic cancer-associated fibroblasts and to be part of the same physiological process. In other words, normal neighboring cells that are becoming senescent or "old" are directly making food to "feed" the cancer. Aging literally fuels cancer cell growth.

Since senescence is thought to reflect biological aging, this research on autophagy-induced senescence may explain why cancer incidence dramatically increases exponentially with advanced age, by providing a "fertile soil" to support the anabolic growth of "needy" cancer cells.

The findings were reported in the June 15 issue of Cell Cycle.

"This research merges the two paradigms of aging and cancer, and it also brings in cell metabolism," said Dr. Lisanti. "We provide genetic support for the importance of 'two-compartment tumor metabolism' in driving tumor growth and metastasis via a very simple energy transfer mechanism. Senescence and autophagy metabolically support tumor growth and metastasis."

Simply put, aging is the metabolic engine that drives cancer growth.

To test this link, the researchers developed a genetically tractable model system to directly study the compartment-specific role of autophagy in tumor growth and metastasis. First, they took human fibroblasts immortalized with telomerase and transfected them with autophagy genes.

Next, they validated that these fibroblasts show features of mitophagy, mitochondrial dysfunction and a shift toward aerobic glycolysis, with increases in lactate and ketone production, mimicking the behavior of cancer-associated fibroblasts. They observed that autophagic-senescent fibroblasts promoted metastasis, when co-injected with human breast cancer cells, by more than 10-fold.

Thus, metastasis may be ultimately determined by aging or senescent cells in the tumor microenvironment, rather than by the cancer cells themselves. This finding completely changes how we view cancer as a disease.

This observation directly calls into question the longstanding notion that cancer is a cell-autonomous genetic disease. Rather, it appears that cancer is really a disease of host aging, which fuels tumor growth and metastasis, thus, determining clinical outcome. Normal aging host cells are actually the key to unlocking effective anti-cancer therapy.

In the study, the autophagic fibroblasts also showed features of senescence. What's more, the senescent cells shifted toward aerobic glycolysis, and were primarily confined to the tumor stromal compartment.

Autophagy action is also clearly compartment specific, since the researchers showed that autophagy induction in human breast cancer cells resulted in diminished tumor growth. Therefore, selective induction of self-cannibalism in cancer cells is a new therapeutic target for the prevention of tumor growth and metastasis. In this strategy, cancer cells actually eat themselves, reversing tumor growth and metastasis.

To stop tumor growth and metastasis, researchers will need to "cut off the fuel supply" which is provided by aging senescent cells, before it gets to cancer cells by targeting autophagy and senescence in the tumor microenvironment.

These findings are paradigm shifting and will usher in a completely new era for anti-cancer drug development, according to the researchers. Such approaches for targeting the "autophagy-senescence transition" could have important implications for preventing tumor growth and metastasis, and effectively overcoming drug resistance in cancer cells.

"Rapidly proliferating cancer cells are energetically dependent on the aging host tumor stroma," Dr. Lisanti said. "As such, removing or targeting the aging tumor stroma would then stop tumor growth and metastasis. Thus, the aging stroma is a new attractive metabolic or therapeutic target for cancer prevention."

A clear byproduct of this research would also be the development new anti-aging drugs to effectively combat, stop or reverse aging, thereby preventing a host of human diseases, particularly cancer.

Reasonably priced Loud snoring Remedies ? All of our Directory of ...

Many of us loathe to visit observe our medical doctors, at least most people will be, particularly to cope with something which appears so trivial being a loud night breathing cure.

Well, let me tell you the way little heavy snoring is?Not really! It can be a strong outright danger to the health and fitness. Let alone a true ache while in the rear end on your husband or wife or maybe associate, or maybe appropriate, a pain in the eardrums. Should your loud night breathing includes hindrance as part of your deep breathing or maybe you will be frequently weary in the daytime, go to the medical doctor now before selecting a great otc supplements treatment.

Now with in spite of this and you are also self-assured your own snoring might be more in the infuriating variety, subsequently proceed. When contemplating a new non-prescribed loud snoring treatment method, take into account that there are pretty much lots otherwise countless numbers on the market this deviate extensively in method and expense and so i am going to hand you my personal five report on economical snoring loudly cures.

Which leads us to your very first inexpensive alternative. At this point consider, a number of or perhaps most of these solutions won't work for your specific instance. But definitely a try may perhaps save some funds in the end and a vacation to the terrifying medical doctors place of work.

One. Snooze Bedroom pillows This Cut down Loud snores

My spouse and i considered considerably, we suggest many pillows claiming decline in loud night breathing in addition to sifted by means of countless opinions of clients that obtained these types of bedroom pillows sleep apnea. I have to admit that will several folks have snoring difficulties, or maybe its sleep companions carry out plus distinctively designed pillows are showing to aid a variety of them.

Most of the far better bedroom pillows (at least by means of those reviews) are produce of memory foam. A single situation lots of people experienced with heavy snoring pillows have been this firmness as well as high temperature the fact that pillow wedge created.

Only two. Anti-Snoring Sprays

Most of these look like a very popular buy for men and women encountering the end results connected with constant loud snores sleep apnea treatment. The way sprays function will oil the particular flesh with your tonsils from drying out, that's asked reduce and sometimes get rid of the good.

I have discovered a couple repellents available illustrate appreciable results using the variety of testimonials by way of prospects making use of the merchandise. Nevertheless, previous to using almost any otc medications, you could possibly wish to check with your physician similar to quite a few users, wartrol built their disorders more painful just after carried on practice.

Three. The Neti Weed

You most likely are wondering just what exactly inside the heck can be a neti pot or maybe do you know what the first is, how the heck should it minimize this or our base associates snoring loudly. Well, your neti cooking pot looks just like a Aladdin's lamp fixture and has existed inside Asia for centuries.

It is applied primarily to get alleviation associated with allergy symptoms in addition to nose similar challenges speculate some people anti snoring as a consequence of allergy or intolerance and also nose challenges, this may also reduce or cease your current loud night breathing. It's a great deal any sinus flusher by using salt water and apply it, you should only put 1 / 4 to 50 % tsp with iodized table salt and include it with of a glass of tepid to warm water and hang the item to the neti-pot. Afterward you stick in this spout directly into 1 nose and let the salt water to drain the some other.

It won't good extravagant however kid, provides them aided apparent a great deal of passageways and might only be precisely what could work in your case and it also will not can come much more low-priced compared to this specific.

Five. Mouth area Pads

Of course, bring back people ancient sports days and nights using the come and chew cast mouth piece. Properly, it is just a nearby match up actually these anti ? stop snoring security guards perform very like the particular mouth area protectors worn through players snoring treatment.

Using this type of heavy snoring procedure, your end will be shaped so it gives your mouth ahead and also keeps the idea into position whilst sleeping to counteract the guitar neck tissues from failing. Several buyers have gotten achievement along with oral cavity pads however, you may suffer tooth soreness to get helpful to the product.

There are many manufacturers in addition to designs of them mouth area guards available on the market but I currently have situated a couple of have outs based on consumer report on success and luxury. Again, this is usually a very inexpensive snoring cure and may become worthy of 1st discomfort to unravel your condition.

Five. Lifestyle!

Ha! People assumed I would not actually discuss the actual hated, form in place or perhaps maintain heavy snoring ultimatum, would you? Well, promoted does offer to generally be said. If you are inside fantastic contour but not somewhat fat, go in front in addition to by pass to your area under relating to get to sleep situation, but if not necessarily, you might want to spend careful attention from what will save you over cash in the actual long run.

Overweight and also Not healthy

When you are over weight, this will decide to put force on your current breathing while you are alert. Exactly what can occur will be fats in which acquire all over your own upper airway causing snore. Certainly, naturally thin folks snore in addition, but simply look at the various other important things about stepping into condition plus cleaning what you eat.

3 . Using Liquor as well as Sedatives (sleeping pills)

Zero, I am not saying you are an alcoholic or maybe drug enthusiast and need to relinquish chilly game hen. What is a dilemma is consuming alcohol prior to going to bed, typically around 3 hours and/or getting a sedative calms the muscular tissues with your neck of the guitar, in that way causing loud snores. And so potentially it could be a simple snoring strategy to transfer your nightcaps upwards some hours and laid off getting almost any sleep aids prior to deciding to click your brand-new anti-snore pillow wedge.

3 . Cigarette smoking

Does indeed any one in fact smoke any longer? Considering the horrible advertising graphically expressing amputated fingertips, digits, hands and wrists plus thighs and leg, would likely that not be more of an deterrent compared to trouble connected with loud snoring? According to the Mayo Clinic, cigarette smokers tend to be 3 x while more likely to possess osa. The delimas, soreness in addition to retention connected with fluid in your uppr respiratory tract.

2 . Sleep Placement

Sleep in your! I know what you will be expressing, you're asleep with virtually no understanding whilst keeping coming on to your backside. Nicely you know what, several of the pillows My spouse and i reviewed actually force you to sleep in your. In reality, I came across that one wedge pillow coded in China could discover when you begin so that you can snoring and can shift your own by simply movements of your cushion. Super! Or you will have your husband or wife still roll you actually over forcefully.

Okay, so now that every one of the enjoyment have been taken out of your health only inside the search for tranquility from the master bedroom, you now are wood decisions which might be low-cost and perhaps can help you save capital.

Again, loud night breathing is not a subject to generally be taken carefully. I can't suggest more than enough that you ought to view your physician to be sure there won't be other medical concerns which can be happening and can even get worse. You will be fortunate and often be suffering from primary loud snoring or you will end up being affected by osa, and that is considerably more serious and to become addressed at some point. If perhaps all is well, then you can definitely examine the very best reasonably priced choices for a person's more effective heavy snoring remedy.

'Fit2Fat2Fit' Author Drew Manning's Top 5 Weight Loss Mistakes to ...

?

ABC News? Sabina Ghebremedhin reports:

A little more than a year ago, personal trainer Drew Manning stopped working out, and started eating fast food, white bread, sugary cereal and soda.

Manning, a self-proclaimed fitness addict, started the weight-gain journey to better understand what his overweight clients go through. ?He let himself go completely, and chronicled the process in video blog on his website, Fit2Fat2Fit.com.

Manning gained 21 pounds in the first month. As the weeks progressed, his confidence ? and his health ? took a downturn.

He
started to get winded easily, and his glucose level and blood pressure
were high. ?It?s getting a little scary,? he said in one of his video
blogs.

Manning?s wife, Lynn, was prepared to see the physical changes in her
husband, but didn?t expect the emotional and personality changes that
came with the weight gain.

?His self-confidence, that completely
went away and depleted,? she said, explaining that he was ?becoming
lethargic, lazy, not helping around the house.?

?I was in denial
at first until she kept pointing out the things I was doing,? Manning
said today on ?Good Morning America.? ?But I did become lazier.? ? I had
less energy so I did become exhausted and I kept seeing how it affected
our relationship because of that. And so that?s where the biggest
surprise was, the emotional [part].

When Manning started his
experiment on May 7, 2011, he had a 34.5-inch waist and 17-inch neck,
and he weighed 193 pounds. Six months later, he had a 48-inch waist,
19-inch neck and he weighed 265 pounds. His clothes didn?t fit.

Last fall, he ended the experiment and started to whip his body back into shape.

?It
was hard to get back into the exercise routine,? Manning said today on
?GMA,? revealing his new physique. ??This is the first time going to the
gym that I was nervous. Before I loved going to the gym, but for the
first time in my life, I was humbled. ? doing push-ups on my knees,
doing assisted pull-ups, things like that for the first time, it was a
very humbling experience.?

Manning tells his amazing story in his
new book, ?Fit2Fat2Fit: The Unexpected Lessons from Gaining and Losing
75 lbs on Purpose.?

Weight-Loss Tips: Avoid These 5 Mistakes

What
are the five biggest mistakes that people make when they are trying to
lose weight? ?Below Drew gives the answers and recommendations for
overcoming those obstacles.

1. Lack of flexibility.
There need to be scheduled breaks. When there is no flexibility or
detours (where every ?bad? decision feels like a loss), it?ll be
impossible to stick with. We all make bad choices sometimes, so we
shouldn?t beat ourselves up about it.

2. Prepare, prepare, prepare your meals in advance.
When you fail to prepare your meals in advance, it becomes so much
easier to give into the temptations that are everywhere (fast food/most
convenient food option). When meals are prepared in advance, you won?t
feel that same temptation.

3. Thinking that just because it?s low-fat or fat-free it?s good for you. A lot of the foods I ate during my Fit2Fat
stage were considered low fat (white bread, white pasta, sugary
cereals, granola bars, sodas, juices, SpaghettiOs, Ramen noodles, etc.)

4. Not understanding the psychological battles that come with weight loss
(plateaus, food addictions, fear of being judged at the gym, etc.).
Understanding the physical side of weight loss (diet and exercise) is
one thing, but I learned that the toughest part is overcoming the mental
and emotional battles.

5. Focusing too much on weight. Weight is not
the best measurement for overall health. You can lose weight in an
unhealthy way, so just because you?re losing weight doesn?t mean you?re
becoming healthier. People need to focus more on becoming medically
healthy first rather than just becoming skinny or weighing less.

Android A to Z: Haptic feedback

Haptic feedback

We're back with another installment of Android A to Z, and this time we're looking at haptic feedback. It's one of those little things that can make a big difference, and something we never really think about. Simply put, haptic feedback (commonly referred to as haptics) is the use of touch feedback to the end user. You know how your Android phone vibrates a tiny bit when you tap one of the navigation buttons? That's haptics at work.

Since the screen on your Android phone or tablet is pretty much just a smooth sheet of glass of some sort or another, it's difficult to register any sort of tactile feedback to our fingers. When we type on a computer keyboard, we know when our fingers have pressed a key down. Our mouse (and some trackpads) do the same thing with a healthy click when we press the button. On a smartphone, we just have to trust we've done something, and wait for it to happen. Haptics helps here. The short and light vibration when typing out a message with an on-screen keyboard can make a big difference for many of us, and I can see myself being pretty frustrated if an on-screen button didn't let me know I had pressed it.

Haptics go beyond navigation and the keyboard though. They can be a very important part of mobile gaming. Gunning your way through an enemy horde is much more satisfying when you feel every shot from your rifle, and nothing lets you know you've hit the wall in your favorite racing game like a harsh vibration from your phone or tablet.

Probably the best thing about haptic feedback on Android devices is the way it can be customized. The OS itself is open, meaning OEM and developers can adjust things to get them just the way they like, including leaving the settings wide open to the user like we see in CyanogenMod ROMs. More importantly, application developers have access to the hardware controller to customize haptic feedback for their products. It goes one step further with the addition of things like the Immersion haptic SDK to the mix, where developers have an almost unlimited way to make their applications register with your fingers as well as your eyes and ears. Sometimes, the little things mean a lot.

NY judge grants class status in Google book fight

(AP) ? A federal judge in New York has granted class certification to authors challenging Internet search leader Google over its plans for the world's largest digital library.

Judge Denny Chin ruled in a written decision Thursday that class action is "more efficient and effective than requiring thousands of authors to sue individually." He says requiring each author to sue Google Inc. would risk disparate results in nearly identical lawsuits and exponentially increase the cost of litigation.

The Authors Guild had sought class certification. Google already has scanned more than 20 million books for the project. The judge rejected Google's attempt to toss The Authors Guild from the case.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google said in a statement Thursday that it's "confident that Google Books is fully compliant with copyright law."

Microsoft announces Office 365 for Government, touts its fluffy cloud-based goodness

Microsoft announces cloud-based Office 365 for Government

Unlike certain folks who wear tinfoil hats Microsoft has no qualms working with the guv'ment. Having added Office 365 support to Windows Phone in its Mango update, the company is now turning its attention to a less tech-averse Uncle Sam with the introduction of the obviously named Office 365 for Government. According to Microsoft, this rendition of Office 365 places US government data in the soft embrace of the cloud via its own segregated community. Offerings featured with the service include Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Lync Online and Office Professional Plus. Now, you don't need to be wearing shiny, crumpled headwear to voice concerns about some evildoer messing around with government data on the cloud. Microsoft assures that the service supports the "most rigorous global and regional standards," including ISO 27001, SAS70 Type II, EU Safe Harbor and FISMA. Given all the waist tightening Uncle Sam's being asked to go through recently, a cloud solution might actually sound appealing if it proves to be more cost-effective overall.
